"As Mayor of Houston, one of my personal priorities has been to leverage the influence of this office to encourage all Houstonians to practice healthier lifestyle habits and take greater responsibility for their own health. I therefore launched my “Get Moving Houston” program in January, 2005 and appointed Herb Lipsman to lead this effort as Chairman of The Mayor’s Wellness Council.
Lipsman immediately organized a group of some 30 plus business, civic, education and healthcare leaders from across the city to work collaboratively toward building awareness and meaningful action around health and wellness activities.
With Lipsman leading the charge, Houston has dropped from its embarrassing ranking as the “Fattest City in America” to the fifth “Fattest” and it appears that this is just the beginning of a positive trend that hopefully will end with Houston ranked as the “Fittest City in America”!
Lipsman continues to devote much of his time to making Houston a “model city for community wellness”, a distinction that will serve the Greater Houston area well for many years to come when recruiting new companies and workers.
